Inspired by the iconic Roman Gladius, the Augustine is Dawson’s modern tribute to Augustine of Hippo, one of the most influential voices of the early Church, whose writings helped shape Christian thought for centuries. Reimagined through Dawson’s unmistakable craftsmanship, this limited-edition blade carries the long, commanding profile that made the Spatha a symbol of authority across the late Roman Empire.

With a 21.75” blade and an overall length of 28.75”, the Augustine blends historic Roman geometry with Dawson’s elite fit and finish, delivering an elegant silhouette, decisive point, and unmistakable presence. More than a weapon, the Augustine is a legacy piece crafted for collectors who value precision, history, and purpose woven into steel.

Augustine is the third release in a series of reimagined artifacts released in collaboration with Wesley Huff, titled; Apologia. This collection is a series of reimagined artifacts from the time the early fathers of the Church walked the earth.

The Restless Youth

In the 4th century, the young Augustine walked the streets of Thagaste in Roman North Africa, far removed from the saint and theologian he would one day become.

Born in 354 AD in Thagaste, Numidia (modern-day Algeria), Augustine was raised between two worlds: his father Patricius, a pagan Roman official, and his mother Monica, a devout Christian whose persistent faith and prayers would profoundly shape his future.

Though brilliant and ambitious, Augustine’s early life was marked more by intellectual hunger and worldly desire than by spiritual devotion.

An Ambitious Ascent

An Ambitious Ascent

Captivated by language, philosophy, and persuasion, Augustine left for Carthage as a young man to study rhetoric. His exceptional intellect quickly distinguished him, leading him through positions of increasing prestige in Carthage, Rome, and eventually Milan.

Yet beneath his professional ascent remained a deep spiritual dissatisfaction, a longing he would later immortalize in his Confessions:

“Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

Though Augustine pursued wisdom, pleasure, and status, none OF THESE could quiet the inner emptiness that haunted him.

When Study Became Conversion

Augustine’s turning point began not with faith, but with admiration.

In Milan, he was drawn to Bishop Ambrose, initially because of Ambrose’s renowned eloquence and rhetorical mastery. But what began as intellectual respect gradually became spiritual awakening.

Through Ambrose’s teaching, Augustine encountered Scripture with new depth, particularly the writings of Paul and the Gospel of John.

For the first time, his pursuit of truth was no longer centered on personal ambition—but on Christ.

The Pursuit of Truth FulfilleD

Surrounded by Christian thinkers and transformed by conviction, Augustine ultimately surrendered to the faith his mother had long prayed he would embrace. In 387 AD, he was baptized by Ambrose in Milan.

After returning to North Africa, Augustine established a monastic community in Thagaste, dedicating himself to prayer, study, and Christian fellowship. Eventually, in Hippo Regius, he was called by the people to serve as priest, and later bishop—a role he would hold for the rest of his life.

From this position, Augustine became one of Christianity’s most influential voices, producing theological works that would shape Christian doctrine for centuries.

The Legacy of His Works

Augustine died in 430 AD, leaving behind some of the most significant writings in Christian history.

His Confessions stands as one of the earliest autobiographies ever written—a deeply personal, philosophical, and spiritual reflection addressed directly to God. Its influence on Christian thought, literature, and theology remains immeasurable.

In his monumental work City of God, Augustine responded to the collapse of Rome by contrasting the transient “City of Man” with the eternal “City of God.” Here, he laid critical foundations for Christian political theology and the moral framework that would later become known as Just War Theory.

Though deeply cautious of violence, Augustine confronted the difficult reality that force, under strict moral conditions, could be justified in defense of justice and peace.

Sharpening

Q. What edge angle are Dawson knives sharpened at?

A. 18 degrees

Q. What blade sharpener should I use?

A. We recommend the Warthog V-Sharp A4 Knife Sharpener for home use. We also offer free professional resharpening of your Dawson knife.

Q. My sharpener only adjusts in 5-degree increments (15, 20, 25, etc.) What angle should I set my sharpener at to resharpen my Dawson knife?

A. That depends on the model and intended use. For a thinner steel with a fine, sharp edge intended for game processing or food prep, go with 15 degrees. If your knife is built from a thicker steel and intended for heavy chores like batoning or chopping, we recommend going for the more impact-resistant edge at 20 degrees.

Blade Care

Title

Q. Are Dawson blade finishes safe to use around food?

A. Yes. We do not use any chemical coatings on our blades, and we also use only food-grade blade protectants.

Q. Which blade finish is best for food prep?

A. With proper care, our silver-toned finishes (Rainstorm, Riverborn, Monsoon, etc.) stay looking their best longest when coming into frequent contact with food acids.

Q. Are Dawson blade finishes sprayed or painted on?

A. No. We have developed our own customized heat treatment processes that draw the unique tones and patterns of our signature finishes out of the steel itself. Each finish is 100% one of a kind.

Q. How do I care for my blade?

A. After use, we recommend immediately cleaning your blade with a mild dish soap and warm water, then drying thoroughly. Apply a food-safe blade protectant (we recommend Dawson Blade Balm or FrogLube Paste), allow it to sit on the steel for about 30 seconds, then rub clean with a soft cloth. Store your knives in a dry place, away from extreme temperatures.

Handle Care

Title

Q. How do I care for my G10 handle?

A. G10 is a very tough and low-maintenance material. If it becomes dirty or stained, remove the scales from your blade using a hex head driver or Allen wrench. Clean the scales with a strong, clear alcohol (e.g., Everclear or isopropyl alcohol) and a cloth or old toothbrush. Once scales are clean and dry, apply a coating of FrogLube or Dawson Blade Balm to restore the G10’s rich color. Re-assemble the blade and handles, making sure to thoroughly tighten all fasteners.

Sheath Care

Title

Q. How do I set up my sheath for different carry styles?

A. Check out our Care + Keeping page for step-by-step videos on adjusting your sheath mounts to accommodate your preferred carry.

Q. How do I attach/use the UltiClip with my Dawson sheath?

A. Check out our Care + Keeping page for a step-by-step video guide to installing and using the UltiClip 3.3 Slim.

Sheath Care Note: To avoid scratching your blade finish, we recommend using a blast of compressed air to blow out any accumulated grit inside the sheath. You may also rinse it out, allowing it to air dry thoroughly before storing your knife inside. Avoid exposing your sheath to extreme heat, such as leaving it inside a closed vehicle. Doing so can deform the Kydex and ruin its precision fit to your knife.
