BASIC LEVEL
New to our Grind-In? This is the class for you.
Aspiring knifemakers, start here. We'll walk you through the knifemaking process step-by-step, sharing 35+ years of experience, tips and tricks. Get a feel for the steel, but don't worry about perfection. We got you.

  • We'll demonstrate the how, why and why nots of hollow grinding, then let you try it yourself on two practice blades
  • We provide one of our own professionally-ground blades for you to finish your knife with--no need to stress about grinding your blade perfectly the first time!
  • Get up close and personal with a variety of specialized knifemaking machinery and equipment
  • We'll professionally heat-treat your knife in our ovens
  • Fit and shape your G10 handle
  • Build your own sheath 
  • Quality instruction by John Roy and Dennis Cook; professional Dawson knifemakers with more than thirty-five years' combined experience 
  • Take home your own handmade knife
  • Lunch provided Friday and Saturday

Minimum of one year of previous attendance at the Grind-In required to register for this class.
Open exclusively to attendees of our previous Grind-Ins, this year you'll be using a variety of tools and machinery to learn and apply more advanced knifemaking techniques.

  • Build on last year's skills with NEW machinery, tools and techniques
  • NEW! You'll craft a unique 4" Scagel-style blade design we've created just for the 2022 Moderate Level class
  • We'll professionally heat-treat your knife in our ovens
  • Make your own Scagel-style Stag and leather handle for your knife
  • Design and craft decorative file work
  • Build and sew a leather sheath

The Big Bear has plenty of heft to power your way through camp chores, chopping, shelter building and game quartering.
Pathfinder
The Pathfinder's heavy-duty drop point blade has plenty of heft for chopping, shelter building, camp chores and game quartering.
Raider 5
Excellent as an all around field, backpacking, rescue and survival knife.
Chief
The Chief rules them all as a superior outdoors knife! Its classic drop point blade style is custom heat-treated and hollow ground to a fine, strong point.
