Description: Patterned after the short tantos the Japanese Samurai traditionally carried as a companion blade to their Katanas, Barry’s Kogai (pronounced Koh-guy) is designed to serve you well not only as a compact and versatile fighter but as an all around field knife as well. Streamlined and efficient, the blade has a top bevel for balance and easy penetration, and is hollow ground to a razor fineness on the edge. The Kogai features Barry's Japanese Interlocking Wrap handle, underlaid with genuine Stingray skin.
About the Dawson hamon or "hardline": This tempering method was developed and perfected by Barry over many years, based on traditional Japanese heat-treating methods as well as the utilization of modern tools, technological advancements and more than 40 years of knifemaking experience. It produces a very hard cutting edge, (visible on the darker "hardline") with a softer back (the lighter area along the spine of the blade) to absorb shock and resist chipping or breaking.

A wood handle comes standard ONLY with our Hamon option. We select the best quality Arizona Ironwood for our wood handles. Ironwood grows predominantly in the deserts of Arizona and California, as well as Mexico, and is one of the hardest and densest woods in the world, with a specific gravity of around 1.2 or more.
Ironwood comes in a variety of grain patterns and red-gold variants, as shown in the examples above. If you prefer a different type of wood when ordering a knife or sword with the Hamon option, please contact us prior to ordering to verify availability. When ordering, be sure to note your preference in the "Order Notes" section during checkout.
We offer simple engraving (up to 10 characters, including spaces) at no additional charge. This is ideal for adding a name, date or initials to the blade. Longer engravings are available for a fee. Call or email prior to ordering for pricing. Please specify in the "Order Notes" section what you would like engraved, and if you prefer block or cursive lettering. Please verify spelling and spacing prior to placing your order. If you need to make a change, call or email us immediately.

Our family has been handcrafting knives and swords right here in the USA for more than 40 years. Today there are three generations of Dawson knifemakers working together in our shop near Prescott, Arizona. We handle every aspect of the knifemaking process in-house, from designing new models to grinding, heat-treat and finishing work.
We choose only the best components for our knives: 80CrV2, a premium, German-milled "super steel" made with Vanadium and imported just for us; Cerakote Elite, 3x stronger than standard Cerakote blade coatings; Micarta, exotic horns and rare woods for handles; top grain leather hides from Montana and Kryptek Kydex for sheaths.
We love our country, honor our Vets and are proud to be real American craftsmen.
